“Beautifully written, absorbing and strangely seductive, this book is a panacea; everyone should read it. Robinson’s gentle yet powerful journey through the seasons is balm for the soul. It should be in schools, workplaces and the halls of government. Its grounding, healing message is what we all need right now. Robinson for Minister of Magic and Wonder!”
—Miriam Darlington, The Times
“Sarah Robinson takes us with her on an amazing journey of discovery, interweaving the history, legends and superstitions surrounding the much-maligned witches, healers and wisewomen of the past – their stories still preserved in old manuscripts, in old tales, in the landscape, in ancient sites, in caves and woods. This is a sensitive, well researched investigation. It is insightful, thought-provoking and sometimes shocking, as Sarah upturns the history of the witch in our land. She gathers her experiences and explores her relationship with what she discovers – draws from the spirits of place, the sense of ‘Other’, the wildlife and nature connection that she experiences along the way. Historical facts interweave with tales passed down through countless generations. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read, told with insight, good humour and a refreshing honesty. It is a great inspiration to us all to get out into our ancient landscape and experience our interconnectedness for ourselves.”
—Glennie Kindred, author of Earth’s Cycle of Celebration, Between the Worlds and many more
“A warm, witty and witchy tour of Britain, attentive to hidden voices, rich folklore and vital history.”

Meet the artist: Sarah Vivian
Womancraft Publishing is proud to celebrate not just the words, but the images of talented women too.

Sarah Vivian took an Honours Degree in Education in 1975, with art and craft as the main subjects, and followed the craft avenue professionally after college. She set up a craft business in 1976, and for over ten years she was a handloom weaver in a craft centre in Devon. She moved to her own textile gallery in 1988 and produced a wide range of items in printed fabrics, painted silks, batik, embroidery and patchwork. The gallery also sold the work of 150 craftspeople and held exhibitions. From 1982 to 1990 Sarah was a council member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, and also served on various Craft Committees, and the local Chamber of Commerce. She moved to West Penwith in 1996 and started painting full time.
“My painting expresses my love of the land, especially South West Cornwall, and is a connection with the beauty and power of the landscape. The paintings are realistic and representational, but not in a solely photographic way; they are hyper-real, or more than real. I paint with heightened and intensified detail to give the paintings a strong impact. I look for the symmetries and similarities of patterns, the inherent fractals of growth and movement, and emphasise these to try to show the magic or earth energy, the resonance, of a place, a stone, a tree.
“I love the qualities of oil paint, which enable me to build up complex layers of colour, combining classic technical methods of “thin to fat and dark to light” with Pre Raphaelite techniques of layers of translucent glazes on a brilliant white ground. As the paintings are left to dry for a week or so between stages in different areas, I have several in progress at a time, and they can take up to nine months. They are then left for six months or more before varnishing. My studio is perfect, as it is white and light, with velux roof windows and a large window facing west with a view out to the sea and a glimpse of the Isles of Scilly.”
